Kodaikanal preserves a unique flowering plant Kurunji or kunjarani only found there and is nature's gift to that place. The flower is seen blooming once in every 12 years.
Situated at a height of about 2,133 m altitude and covering an area of 21,45 sq km, the charming hill station is the best place for the newly wed couples and peoples who wants to have peace of mind in nature's lap. The hill town is also renowned for the international institution of repute.
Major Attractions of Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal Lake
The majestic, wonderful and lovely man made lake is constructed in a star shaped form. The lake spreads out to a lavish sixty acres and its prime attraction is the greenery around which the lake is being created. To add to its beauty is the boat club and the facility for water racing. It is also known as the Berijam Lake. The Bryant Park on the eastern side is too located inside the lake making it more scenic. The park can be visited to watch the variety of flowers, hybrids and rafts.
Shenbaganur Museum
The museum nearby to the park at a distance of 5 kms preserves around 300 species of Orchids and different species of birds.
The Shenbaganur Museum is maintained by the Sacred Heart College. The museum is regarded as one of the best orchidoriums in the country.
Coaker's Walk
There is an another attraction known by the name of Coaker's Walk which is a pathway. The pathway derieved its name from Lt.Coaker who took the initiative to prepare the map of Kodai.
The Pathway is at a distance of one kilometre from the lake and offers the best possible views of the plains downhill.
Kurinji Andavar Temple
Lord Murugan or the brother of Lord Ganesha is the presiding deity of the temple situated 3,2 kms from the Lake.
Kurinji which means hilly region in Tamil literature and Andavar means God. Situated on the top of the hills the temple can be seen from beloe and it offers a good sight of the northern plains.
Silver Cascade
The Cascaded silver waterfalls are located on the Ghat roads about 8 km from the place of Kodaikanal.
The 180 feet high falls are a wonderful sight to the visitors as well and a good form of pure drinking water in the nearby areas. The falls do generally overflows the lake in certain seasons.
